C-Suite perspective from 2022 MedTech Forum –VUCA, Sustainability, Purpose, Access

MedTech Forum is one of the largest medical industry conferences, taking place since 2007. After a 2021 online event this year’s meeting took place, live in Barcelona. Centivis was pleased to be there in person.

Besides various networking opportunities, the key sessions covered the following topics:

  • Innovation, European competitiveness

  • Health data privacy, governance

  • Access, HTA, value-based procurement

  • Regulatory, MDR, IVDR

  • Sustainability

  • Digital health, AI, ML

  • Patient advocacy

It is always valuable to learn about individual topics and recent developments, and CEO’s bird’s eye view helps to put things in perspective. C-Suite executives from device and diagnostics firms, such as bioMerieux, Diabeloop, J&J, Materialise, Medtronic, ResMed, Roche Diagnostics, and Stryker shared their views on various topics.

We have summarized 5 take-away themes:

  1. The VUCA (Volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world is even more present. Covid lock down’s, supply chain disruptions, chip shortages, increasing raw material prices, inflation, and sadly the Ukraine war are making operations less predictable. To solve these complex problems there are no easy solutions, organizations need to stay open to change and embrace agility.

  2. Leadership is changing to a more empathetic and compassionate style. Senior executives feel the urge to foster an inclusive, innovative culture with high ethical standards and integrity, aiming toward an inspiring vision.

  3. Sustainability got prime attention at the conference, emphasizing the urgent need of reaching net-zero emissions. Green, low carbon products and services, renewable, clean energy, electrification, operational efficiency, and carbon capture are high-potential solutions to combating climate change.

  4. Remote working functions and talent is eager to join the industry due to its higher purpose: Covid 19 eliminated unnecessary travel and made remote work a reality, with the paradox: “Close colleagues tend to be further away, faraway colleagues are closer than ever before”. A hybrid working model will likely be the future. This flexibility and the industry’s higher purpose, of saving patients’ lives attract talents who seek to drive change.

  5. MDR, IVDR, value-based reimbursement, and procurement remain major focus topics aiming that innovation, access, and adoption are in balance with increasing safety requirements and health care system sustainability.
